Tips for Dialectical Thinking

Dialectical thinking refers to a method of reasoning and thought that emphasizes the coexistence of contradictions and the process of integrating opposites or conflicting ideas.

  1. Validate

Self-validation involved recognizing and accepting your own thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgement.

  2. Use “And” in place of “But”

Replace “but” with the word “and” to give two statements equal value. “But” can dismiss, while “and” allows a balance of two thoughts at once.

  3. Refrain from Extremes

Beware of using extreme terms like “always” or “never” and instead try to acknowledge the nuances and gray areas. Avoid black and white thinking, as many truths can and do coexist.

  4. Balance Opposites

Different perspectives can coexist in any situation. Embrace that there is no one single “right” answer.

  5. Consider Multiple Perspectives

Actively seek out different viewpoints and try to understand the reasoning behind the difference in viewpoint. This may involve being open to new ideas and adjusting your own perspective. How can you practice more flexibility in your mindset?

  6. Build Awareness

Be mindful about your own personal assumptions and tune into your own thoughts and emotions in the moment to identify rigid thinking patterns and thinking traps that keep you feeling stuck.
